Mining profession worth it? questions

A month or so ago I rolled a new toon on Rangora for the heck of it and decided to try leveling with just mining and crafting and maybe gather some gold to buy apex for my NA main. I'm now level 53 and have over 60k mining (75k with dawnsdrop). I picked Rangora as it seemed to give the best prices for ingots and bricks over the more established servers. But with Apex closing in on 1000 gold, mining does not give enough to even cover 2 apex a month.

It's seems no matter what I do about 60 gold a day is where I max out after mining and making ingots, bricks etc. Now I as my proficiency gets higher I understand I will use less labor per node gathered but I still don't see how this scales to make it a very good profession. right now it seems like about 2.5s per labor which just seems so low. Maybe I am doing something wrong any expert advice would be helpful. When I'm out mining it seems all I see is what appear to be bots or alts.

I have questions are for those experienced in mining with high level proficiency.

As your proficiency rises do you get more rare drops? more fortuna veins? access to Other types of veins I can go mine like starshard? what other advantages?

I try and do the math as to figure out to make my material into ingots and bricks etc. Even messed around combing to make more advanced items like Sturdy ingots, sunridge etc. It has not really added up to make a huge difference to the bottom line after the labor used. Is the better money in making the advanced items or am I missing something here?

I understand getting some land, getting a hauler and making trade runs is of course a much better return than most anything( I hate doing them). My goal was to see if getting a profession to high levels and concentrating on 1 thing can at least be a somewhat viable alternative.

Did I just happen to pick the wrong profession or would farming, gathering, logging or husbandry etc. be pretty similar s/l returns at high proficiencies?
